I must admit that hanging around an edge of town retail shopping estate is not my natural idea of fun but – as informed a few weeks ago by someone who knows much more about it than me – if you want to have a look at soft furnishings, duvets and such stuff then Dunelm (DNLM) is the name to go to. I remembered this snippet of information a week ago when the retailer suffered a sharpish share price fall after saying that, despite taking market share and pushing up their dividend, a full recovery in margins was delayed until the second half of this year as a recent acquisition continued to weigh. Confidence in retailers is at low ebb at the moment with fears over the sustainability of consumer spending after the excesses of Black Friday and Christmas. However recent months have seen some surprisingly good share price performances by retailers with market leading positions, sustainable dividends and well-regarded products. Even a challenging economic backdrop can provide opportunities…especially in names that not every shopper or investor knows about.
